back to homepage what is a periodontist what is periodontal disease how is periodontal disease treated
the primary cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, although there can be many factors that can contribute to the incidence and progression of periodontal disease. bacteria adhere to the tooth surfaces as a sticky colorless film. if the bacterial mass accumulates over time, the plaque hardens into a porous substance that is known as tartar. below the gum line, the bacteria release toxins that will cause inflammation that may cause your gums to become swollen, irritated, red and tend to bleed easily. if the inflammation continues, this can cause the supporting structures of your teeth to weaken and to deteriorate which will ultimately cause loss of your teeth. patients who demonstrate illnesses that cause their immune function to be compromised, such as diabetes, cancer, or transplant patients, will often experience a more aggressive form of periodontal disease.
