How is Periodontal Disease Treated?

often treatment depends on each individual's condition. early stage: improvement in brushing and flossing followed by scaling and root planing can often bring the condition under control. advanced disease state: further treatment such as periodontal surgery may be necessary. scaling and root planing is a non-surgical form of periodontal therapy. this type of therapy removes the subgingival (below the gum line) calculus and also removes the supragingival (above the gum-line) tarter build-up. this type of procedure takes very little time to complete and discomfort following the procedure is rare. if periodontal surgery is necessary, procedures are performed to correct the destruction that has occured due to disease progression.
